The Ghana Journalists Association has launched its Social Network Platform at the tenth anniversary boot camp organized by penplusbytes at the Accra International Press Center.

The president of the association, Ransford Tetteh who launched the platform cautioned Journalists against unprofessionalism that the free range media usually provides.

2ND NATIONAL FEMINISTS FORUM HELD

Participants at a three-day feminist forum in Accra, Ghana have been sharing their experiences on the challenges and benefits of championing the cause of women and children in the country.

The second National Feminist Forum organized under the auspices of the Network for Women’s Right, (NETRIGHT), and funded by the African Women Development Fund, AWDF, sought to dialogue with feminists and women’s groups across the country on ways to forge a united front in promoting feminism in Ghana and the African continent.

 In 2008, the Centre for Widows and Children Assistance (CWCA) in Tanzania received a grant of US$10, 000 from AWDF. This grant enabled the group to do training on women’s land rights for local government leaders, widows and youth in Kisarawe district.

 Discrimination against women through customary law prevails in Tanzania, particularly in the regions where land is fertile, productive, and a scarce commodity.  Since land in the areas of Kilimanjaro, Kagera, Mara, Dodoma, and Iringa is a highly valued resource (because of cash crop production) it remains under male control and is distributed through patrilineal inheritance practices.

FAWE REWARDS TEN GIRLS FOR EXCELLENCE

 The forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Ghana, envisions to promote gender equity and equality in education with emphasis on girls in terms of access, retention, and performance by working with partners at global, continental, national, and local levels in sub-Saharan African to create positive societal attitudes, policies and practices.

FAWE’s programmes fall in line with the government’s vision of creating an enabling environment for children to go through their education successfully and girls need to take advantage of the opportunity to move to the highest level of the educational ladder.

In this respect, FAWE has rewarded 10 girls who have excelled in their examinations, demonstrated leadership qualities and are pursuing higher education nation-wide.

THE universe harbors amongst other things an environment that gives humanity some aura of space and a sense of ownership – at least to whoever exists in the environment.

The environment is the quality of air water and land in or on which people, animals and plants live or survive. The importance of the environment therefore cannot be glossed over. Could there be another abode for humanity other than the environment?

As importance as it is, the environment has constantly been plagued by all forms of hazards which continuously threaten its existence. Will the universe lose this fortress one day? In Africa particularly, and many parts of the world the developments of slums as a results of human activity has always posed a constant threat to the environment.

AFRICAN WEAR – BEYOND THE FASHION AND PATRIOTISM

IMAGINE a compulsory dress code for all Ghanaians on a particular day. That would be an ambiguous consideration by any government. But gradually, though not under any coercion, the introduction of a Friday African wear in Ghana is catching on as an act of patriotism and fashion.

Visit the various institutions; the banks, government agencies or the central districts of the various Ghanaian cities and towns and you will either see a beautiful designed shirt in Ghanaian fabric or a local “kaba” or slit sown from a customized African or Ghanaian fabric.
